BOBBI'S STORY
What am I going to wear
today???
Sewing, designing and creating have been a passion of mine for as
long as I can remember. I learned many skills by sewing with my
mother. One of my first sewing projects was a coin purse with a snap
and decorative button. I carried that thing everywhere!
I soon began sewing and designing my own clothes. Some of my
friends and family would ask me to make something for them, and I
would. I loved the creative freedom and sense of accomplishment when
I had finished a project.
While sewing, designing and creating, I also fed my "left brain"
by starting and running successful technology businesses. One
of them being a computer tech support company, another a web design
and software programming company and another being a software
training facility. I have also had the opportunity to teach IT
classes as adjunct faculty at a local university.
When I received the biopsy results that my breast cancer had
recurred in late 2008, I knew that I would be sewing and adapting clothes for my
NEW body…I have had several surgeries, including a single mastectomy
and reconstruction the first time around. When I had my recurrence,
and found that I had the BRCA 2 mutation which predisposes me to
future “female” cancers, I decided to have a double mastectomy as a
preventative measure. I just didn’t want to go through any more
surgeries.
Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would be inspired
with so many great design ideas and have the skills to make them a
reality. Opportunities abound when we least expect them…
I found that living with and accepting my new body wasn’t so bad.
It gave me a great opportunity to be creative with new clothing
designs, accessories and jewelry. Yes, there are difficult times,
but knowing that I don’t have to go along with society’s definition
of “looking like a woman means you have to have breasts” gives me
strength to know that I am a woman. A confident and beautiful woman, too.
Commercially made clothes don’t work for us…we need clothing that
is designed for our new shapes. That has been and still is a great
creative challenge and opportunity for me to come up with new
designs and options – This is my PASSION and I am so blessed to have
found this!
I have learned that LIFE GOES ON! In fact, it goes
on quite a bit regardless that you have cancer. I would hope that my
designs can help you with that ultimate question…WHAT AM I GOING TO
WEAR TODAY?
